Brockenhurst gas supplies remain off as flooded main pumped


Gas supplies to 58 homes, a hotel and college remain off after water flooded into the gas main.Supplies were lost in the New Forest on Monday night after thousands of litres of water got in to the gas pipe.All gas systems in the homes, Balmer Lawn Hotel and Brockenhurst College remain shut down while the water is pumped out.Gas distribution company SGN said engineers worked overnight to find and pump out pockets of water.It is not yet known when all supplies will be restored.More on this and other stories from across the South of EnglandBalmer Lawn Hotel manager Michael Clitheroe said: “It’s seriously inconvenient to our customers – but all we can do is sit and wait.”The hotel has been left with no heating and hot water.

On Tuesday, gas supplies to 64 homes, as well as the two spa hotels in the village and the college were lost.SGN said it had removed about 1,980 gallons (9,000 litres) of water and had been able to restore supplies to six properties and Careys Manor Hotel overnight.The company has a customer service team handing out electric cooking and heating equipment.It said water got into the mains after workers from Southern Water damaged the gas main on Monday.Two-way temporary traffic lights are in place in Lyndhurst Road outside Careys Manor Hotel.
