Cash machine ram-raid shuts M27 services

Part of a motorway service station in Hampshire has been closed after a ram-raid by thieves targeting a cash machine.A Land Rover Defender was used to gain entry to the services on the M27 westbound at Rownhams shortly before 01:00 GMT.Five men, all with their faces covered, were thought to have been involved.Police said an ATM containing a “substantial quantity of cash” was taken from inside the building.A dark-coloured Land Rover Defender, along with a white Transit-style van, were seen to drive into the service station before the 4×4 was used to remove the ATM. Both vehicles then left the scene.Detectives have appealed for information from anyone who was at the services between junctions 3 and 4 at the time or saw the vehicles on the motorway. The restaurants and toilets are expected to remain closed throughout Tuesday while structural engineers assess damage to the building, although the petrol station remains open.
